Invitation Letter text:

We’re pleased to invite you to our 50th Asilomar Microcomputer Workshop, April 24 – 26, 2024, at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA, on the Monterey Peninsula. Please join us in making it a special event!

Since the beginning, AMW has offered a friendly, informal venue for exceptional technical minds to gather as peers. We limit registration to about 100 for the best workshop experience. However, since COVID has not gone away–and some of us are in vulnerable groups–we will again stream the program for remote attendees and continue to maximize safety in the meeting and social gatherings by asking attendees to be fully vaccinated, boosted, and tested daily.

We will meet in the Fred Farr Forum complex opposite Asilomar Ave. from the Main Entrance. The Fred Farr meeting room is a larger space and opens directly onto a patio where social receptions will be held. We have requested that the sleeping rooms be conveniently located in or near the Fred Farr complex. We are returning to shared rooms, although single rooms will be available on request for an additional charge.

A Zoom link for each day will be emailed to all registrants. Both scheduled talks and RAT Talks will be hybrid. We recommend you get a Discord user ID to post comments and questions for the speakers and follow the out-of-band discussion threads there.

We are continuing the original Workshop concept of “no wallflowers”. Active participation by all attendees is the essence of the workshop. Whether you are scheduled as a session speaker, a member of a panel discussion, and/or speak during our RAT Session, we’d like to hear from you. Overt commercialism is discouraged. Newcomers—in-person and remote—will have the opportunity to introduce themselves with a brief elevator speech to all.

While we always strive for a program that is as futures-oriented as possible, we will also recognize this 50th Workshop with a special opening session that will include one of our founders, as well as a retrospective on how Gary Kildall influenced, and was influenced by, the annual AMW gathering. As our program takes shape, your responses to questions in the registration form always help us add topics we may not know about.

The 2024 rates (In-Person rates for shared occupancy. Single-room upgrade is $250):

  • “Early Bird” from now until Sun Feb 25, 2024: $999 In-Person; Remote is $149. Expires in about a month, so don’t dawdle!
  • Regular rate from Mon Feb 26 to Sat Mar 23, 2024: $1299 In-Person; Remote is $199.
  • Rush rate from Sun March 24, 2024: $1499 In-Person; Remote $249, but participants will only be accepted as our limited facility space allows. Don’t procrastinate.

The fee covers everything except your travel: workshop registration, shared lodging, handouts, and all meals and refreshments. Despite continued uncertainty, we work hard to keep the fees as low as possible. Please let us know if the cost might keep you from attending, as a limited number of scholarships may be provided on a case-by-case basis. Even if you cannot attend, your tax-deductible donations can help sponsor things like scholarships, breaks, A/V, etc. Please contact chair@AMW.org if you can help.

Please register as soon as possible. If circumstances once again force the cancellation of the in-person event, your fee will be refunded. Choose one of the following options to complete your registration:

  • Mail registration form with payment to AMW, PO Box 2505, Cupertino, CA 95015-2505
