The Asilomar Microcomputer Workshop (AMW) was sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society as a technical workshop in 1975. It was started in response to the intense interest generated by the 1974 release of the 8086-based MITS Altair 8800 microcomputer. Over the years, discussion topics have broadened far beyond just processor technology as shown by every year’s program as included in a commemorative booklet.
Co-founder Fred Coury wrote a Computer Society story about AMW’s founding, and his Computer History Museum Oral History provides more details. The intentional lack of written proceedings, and the exclusion of the press, are perhaps the most distinctive characteristics that have made AMW so special and successful. As we plan for a very special 50th workshop, we invite you to submit your name and talk ideas for this April 24-26, 2024 event. You will receive registration information, and we will not bombard you with emails!
